Massachusetts Code Change Alert!

Impacting Wheelchair Lifts

The Massachusetts Board of Elevator Regulators has recently made a change to the elevator code.  As of October 15, 2010, key switches will no longer be allowed to be installed on wheelchair lifts.  All existing key switches on wheelchair lifts will have to be removed by November 1, 2011.  This change will bring the elevator code into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and ultimately lead to greater access for individuals who rely upon these lifts for access.

Please feel free to contact an Atlantic Elevator Representative to determine if your wheelchair lift falls under this code change.

Most lift manufacturers place a key switch at each floor near the elevator doorway and another is located inside the car or somewhere on the platform.

Massachusetts will require each key switch be removed and operated only by pressure operated switches.
